SHOWER GIRL...IT WAS INEVITABLE

Behind every hero is a girl. There's a Spider-Girl, a Supergirl, Batgirl...somehow it always ends up that way. Sometimes it's to draw a female readership, other times to create sexual tension to make more story. In this case I was going for both.

I am well aware that Shower Boy is very male oriented, with only a select few appearances by girls. Sure there was old women who either got stepped on by Godzilla, committed suicide in a church, or simply got smashed by a bath tub. Then there was Cindy, who offered Shower Boy to put his turkey in her oven for Thanksgiving (heh). Another shot down Shower Boy beneath the mistletoe, and finally one other nameless girl was arrested for fornicating with a Santa Clause.

But that isn't much for 63 comic strips. Because Shower Girl is the first major female character in these strips, I thought it'd be a cool idea to make this page: a select few drawings that went into her creation. It's nothing huge, but hopefully it shows how much thought actually goes into these comic strips.

FINAL DESIGN

<------ Somehow my female drawing ability took a 180, and suddenly I found myself looking at this. She looks very attractive and very provocative (which is the formula for the entire Shower Boy concept). Sometimes it's hard to draw a character the almost exact same way, but this was a design I could keep replicating. Not too shabby, eh?

I admit that I wasn't very good at drawing the female figure. It's a fact that men draw better men, and women draw better women because one understands their own anatomy the most. So naturally this design wasn't all that great. The hair design is loosely used from the comic "Runaways". She looked a bit too bulky, looking more like a feminine Shower Boy than a true Shower GIRL. ------------->

The #1 rule in making Shower Girl was that she HAD to be really attractive and comedically suggestive. Rather than just dive in and make the comic strips, I did some sketches to get a feel for her character. These are the main three that taught me how to manipulate the designs to achieve the desired results.

I was exploring ways to make suggestive poses that looked so wrong...yet natural. As you can see, Shower Girl has stopped a bank robber and Shower Boy is simply cheering her on. I wanted to take a seemingly normal event and make it look obviously wrong. I didn't end up going with this one, although I liked the idea quite a bit. Those that are easily offended might not mind it because it can be seen in two ways: the capture of a bank robber....or seen as a strong sexual suggestion.

I drew Shower Girl in a dress to explore ways to make a character look sensuous. Typically I like drawing action scenes, like a gunfight and such. So this was more subtle for me, and think this drawing came out well. In the actual strips I didn't have her wear a dress and instead kept her almost totally naked, even when the censor boxes were dropped. At the very least it keeps the readers' attention.

The rough figure sketch was a way to practice sexy positioning. Notice how her arm is covering her...um, taco...as though saying "can't touch this". And yet she's laying on her side simply asking for it, with her hair blowing in the wind. It's a simple sketch that is very defineable even without distinct details.
